Jon Rahm tears glove apart after hitting first shot out of bounds again in British Open meltdown

News RoomBy News RoomJuly 19, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

Jon Rahm began Sunday with an opportunity to work himself into the mix at the British Open, sitting six shots back of leader Sam Burns.

His chances blew up on his first shot.

For the second straight day, Rahm whacked his tee shot on the first hole out of bounds, and he was so mad at himself that he tore his glove apart.

He ended up with a double-bogey six on the par-4 opening hole, just as he did during Saturday’s third round.

While Rahm shot even for the third round to remain at 4-under for the tournament, he appears to have shot himself out of contention on Sunday.

After a birdie on the fifth hole, he had consecutive bogeys on the sixth and seventh holes to fall to 3-over for the round and 1-under for the tournament, sitting nine shots back of the lead through his first eight holes.

The glove-ripping incident marks the second meltdown by a LIV Golf star at Royal Birkdale after Bryson DeChambeau went berserk after being assessed a two-stroke penalty on Friday after it was ruled he improved his lie.

That may prove costly as DeChambeau began Sunday at 6-under, four strokes back of Burns.

Rahm, a two-time major champion, has not won a major since joining LIV Golf. His performances at the majors have been all over the place; he tied for second at this year’s PGA Championship but then missed the cut during the U.S. Open at Shinnecock.

Cameron Young was the big mover early Sunday, shooting 5-under through the first 12 holes to get to 8-under overall, two shots behind Burns.

Scottie Scheffler was 3-under through nine to get to 7-under overall.
