Jimmy Garoppolo likely won’t be back with Rams, but he’s not retiring

News RoomBy News RoomJuly 23, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t hanging up his cleats just yet.

The veteran quarterback has competed in the NFL for 12 seasons, and it appears he has at least one more campaign in him.

Garoppolo, 34, considered retirement this spring but is still open to play in 2026. He’s coming off a 2025 season in which he was the backup signal caller for Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo provided the latest update.

“Here’s my understanding with Jimmy G. In the right situation, he will come back, and he will play football. He has not decided to retire. He just needed some time to himself this offseason,” Garafolo said.

“I don’t think anything is imminent. I wouldn’t expect him to sign with anybody. Maybe it’s gonna have to be an injury to a quarterback and you need a veteran guy to be part of the mix, if not the starter.

More From Valentina Martinez

From The Insiders: Jimmy Garoppolo considered retirement this spring but is very much open to playing this season in the right situation. Nothing imminent but he’s an experienced, veteran QB available for a team that might need one in the near future. pic.twitter.com/Q60E9tFCXD

“But Jimmy Garoppolo is not retiring. From my understanding, he will continue to play.”

After spending the last two seasons in LA, it appears Garoppolo will join another team after the Rams drafted Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

While he likely won’t sign with a team anytime soon, there could be an opportunity for Garoppolo down the line. The ebbs and flows of an NFL season are hard to predict, but injuries are a recurring theme in the league.

Garoppolo could join a team with an ailing quarterback room later this year after the latest update effectively squashed retirement rumors.
