Jets look to show offensive effectiveness wasn’t a fluke in Week 2 test vs. Packers

No one is going to confuse them with the Greatest Show on Turf just yet, but in Week 1, the Jets offense looked like something we have not seen in these parts for a while — competent.

The Jets put up 367 yards against the Titans and controlled the game. They bullied Tennessee up front, running the ball 10 consecutive times at one point in the first half, showing they could run the ball and take deep shots in a 23-10 win.

Now, can they do it again?

The Jets play their home opener against the Packers (0-1) on Sunday, and Green Bay is a step up in class from the rebuilding Titans.

Still, there should be chances against a Green Bay defense that gave up 39 points to the Vikings in Week 1 — including 22 in the fourth quarter alone.

“I think we’re at a good spot offensively,” first-year offensive coordinator Frank Reich said. “I feel we’re in a really good spot coming off a game in which we played winning football and put a lot of good things on tape that we feel good about. That being said, we know we left a lot out on the field.

“We left some points on the scoreboard and had some things to clean up and just have to have this obsession to continue to get better and get ready for the next opponent. Got to clean up those mistakes, can’t leave those points on against a team like we’re about to play this week.”

When you look back at that Titans win, it is hard to argue with Reich about missed chances.

The Jets scored just 23 points when it felt like they should have scored 40. They had some pre-snap penalties that hurt them and failed to take advantage of field position after a special teams turnover and in a 2-minute drill at the end of the first half.

The Jets are focused on fixing those issues.

“Me and Garrett [Wilson] talked about this quite a bit,” coach Aaron Glenn said. “We want to be an offense that’s opportunistic. So, when we get a turnover, when we get a long return, when we get the ball in a position to where we should get points, man we want to take advantage of those opportunities. And we didn’t do that to the fullest, and that’s something that we really want to work on this week.”

Thank you

The offensive line stole the show last week, opening up huge holes in the run game and keeping Geno Smith clean. If the Jets can do that again, this offense could improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2015.
