Jacoby Brissett participates in practice as Cardinals contract questions continue to swirl

News RoomBy News RoomJuly 24, 20265 ViewsNo Comments

The Cardinals were pleased to see a familiar face in training camp.

Jacoby Brissett participated in Arizona’s first day of training camp Thursday, despite previously holding out for a reworked contract

Brissett, who was a hold-in during mandatory minicamp in June, completed drills alongside fellow QBs Gardner Minshew II, Carson Beck and Kedon Slovis.

The 33-year-old also did not participate in the voluntary part of the Cardinals’ offseason training program as the two sides tried to work out a deal.

Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur was straight to the point when describing Brissett’s first practice back.

“I mean, he’s here,” LaFleur told reporters, according to ESPN. “He’s under contract and it’s the first day of practice.”

LaFleur added that the contract talks with Brissett are “still ongoing,” as the quarterback is set to make a base salary of $4.88 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed, and he can make up to $5.39 million through incentives.

“It’s been productive between us and his team, so still ongoing but I’d say we’re productive,” LaFleur added.

Brissett played 14 games for the Cardinals last season, racking up 3,366 passing yards along with 23 touchdowns to eight interceptions.

LaFleur was mum when asked about a potential quarterback competition brewing for this season, but he added that Arizona’s plan is to get Brissett up to speed with this year’s playbook.

“So, not really worried about that stuff right now,” LaFleur said. “Really not worried about what any of these guys have ever done in the past. It’s just about building that one day at a time and seeing how good we can be every single day.

“Like I told him yesterday, we don’t need a peak on July 23. We need to get better on July 23. We need to compete against each other on July 23. We need to have the best first block we can without pads. And then we put the pads on, now we get to play a little bit more real football, and we don’t have to peak on July 30 or whenever.

“We just have to get better. And then when we get to Sept. 13, that’s when we have to say, ‘Hey, did we do everything we could to be the best Cardinal team we could be?’”
