Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the investigation that feds probing Rep. Ilhan Omar assembled is a âlarge caseâ dealing with multiple people.
âThis isnât just a case thatâs targeting one individual. This is a large case that we have presented to the DOJ, and the DOJ is leading the investigations,â he told Fox News on Friday.
Mullin said Homeland Security Investigations agents — who searched Omarâs Washington, DC, home on Oct. 12 — âdid a lot of investigation to be able to present the case to them.”
“And I’ll just say this again: We’re enforcing our nation’s laws, and we’re going to do that. We’re not weaponizing. We’re not using political theater on this,” he added.
Authorities are probing Omar over whether the Somalia-born politician engaged in an immigration fraud conspiracy by marrying her alleged brother Ahmed Elmi, a British citizen who describes himself as gay, and whether she made false statements on government documents to gain citizenship.
The feds are also investigating her financial disclosures and whether she inflated her net worth by tens of millions of dollars in House disclosure forms.
Mullin’s comments came the same day The Post reported Omar’s surname was crossed out to replace it with âElmi,â then put back to âOmarâ on a 2009 marriage license, according to a certified copy from the Hennepin County, Minnesota, government.
When asked by MS NOW anchor Chris Hayes last week whether she married her brother, Omar answered: “Not to my knowledge.”
Ilhan Omar’s relative timeline
Significant dates into Rep. Ilhan Omar’s past relationships, which point to a potential sham marriage with her brother.
- 1981 or 1982 â Ilhan Omar is born in Mogadishu, Somalia. Her birth year is in dispute â there are allegations she made herself a year younger to later qualify for citizenship as a minor.
- 1995 â After four years in a refugee camp in Kenya because of the Somalian civil war, Omar and her family emigrate to the US.
- 2002 â Omar marries Ahmed Hirsi (right) in an Islamic ceremony. They applied for a marriage license, but, she said, âwe never finalized the application and thus were never legally married.â They have two children.
- 2009 â Omar marries Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Evidence points to Elmi being her brother, and that she married him so he could legally live in the US after the family wanted him out of the UK.
- 2012 â Omar still lived with Hirsi during this time, witnesses told the Post, and they had a third child this year. Elmi also reportedly leaves Minnesota this year.
- 2016 â The FBI and Department of Homeland Security investigate claims Omar married her brother, as she runs for Minnesotaâs legislature.
- 2017 â Omarâs divorce from Elmi is finalized.
- 2018 â Omar officially marries Hirsi. She runs for Congress for the first time and wins.
- 2019 â Omar leaves Hirsi for Tim Mynett (left), a political consultant who is paid by her campaign. They marry the next year.
- 2021 â A Biden-appointed US Attorney in Minnesota officially shuts down the investigation into Omarâs alleged immigration fraud.
Mullin, a former Republican senator from Oklahoma, defended the probe after former President Barack Obama publicly lambasted it.
âI’ve made this very, very, very, very clear: we’re enforcing our nation’s laws across the board equally, and we’re going to continue to do that,â he said.
âI don’t care where you’re seated, and I don’t care how you’re registered to vote, I don’t care what your job title is. We use it equally.â
He claimed Democrats âcame after their political enemies like President Trump, and they know they weaponized our DOJ and FBI.â
“We’re going to let the facts play out, we’re not playing politics with this — I said this from day one, we’re not playing politics with anybody’s lives,” Mullin stressed earlier in the interview.
Omar has denied any wrongdoing and her lawyers have demanded the “immediate return” of all seized property. Her office did not immediately respond to request for comment.
