I took the Hers hair growth quiz: Is this the solution for my menopausal thinning?

It’s hard knowing which hair growth product is best for you. From best pills to serums, there are many emerging products on the market.

While we have tested Nutrafol firsthand, our curiosity has grown as we have learned more about the Hers Growth application process online and how it may be a good fit for women experiencing hair thinning from entering perimenopause or menopause.

Nutrafol vs. Hers

Unlike Nutrafol, Hers hair growth products require a prescription for some products, and, like all prescriptions, that means there are side effects. Hers also sells drugs to treat menopause and weight loss, but today we are focusing on their hair growth supplements, tinctures and pills.

My hair has always been thick and grown really well. In the last few years, I’ve noticed it is thinning and not as full as it used to be. Although I’m a huge fan of Nutrafol, Hers pinpoints issues directed at perimenopausal and menopausal women that I think would be helpful.

The Hers Consultation and Quiz

The journey to thicker hair begins with the Hers hair quiz, a free digital assessment designed to categorize your needs from thinning, shedding, a widening part, to hormonal thinning related to menopause.

The quiz is highly visual, often asking you to identify your hair density from a series of photos. It’s important to note that this initial quiz is used to personalize your experience and recommend a routine, but it isn’t the official medical evaluation.

You’ll be asked about your primary goal…do you want to stop active shedding, or are you looking to kickstart regrowth and achieve a fuller, thicker mane? Obviously, the answer is yes, yes and yes.

If there was an answer that said, “make me gorgeous, glossy, and the spitting image of Margot Robbie,” I’d click yes.

Although this product will not promise to transform you into Hollywood lore, it can help improve your hair, which will make you feel better about yourself.

One of the most unique offerings on the Hers platform is the Hair Blends line. These are compounded products, meaning they are personalized medications that mix multiple ingredients, like minoxidil, biotin, and vitamin B5, into a single serum, spray or chew.

Depending on your needs, Hers offers both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription (Rx) options. Traditional 5% Minoxidil Foam is OTC and can be purchased directly. However, the more convenient once-a-day oral options, such as Minoxidil + Biotin Chews or oral minoxidil pills, require a prescription. This “pop, chew, or spray” approach is a major draw for women who find messy topical applications difficult to maintain. If prescribed, your treatment is shipped for free directly to your door in discreet packaging.

Hers hair growth costs vary depending on the products you choose and the subscription plan, but typically range from $13 to $75 per month.

Who is Hers hair growth for?

Hers is specifically designed for women experiencing early to moderate female pattern hair loss or thinning due to hormonal changes, such as those occurring during perimenopause or menopause.

It is an ideal solution for women who are proactive about their hair health and can commit to a long-term, daily routine. The platform is particularly helpful for those who have tried over-the-counter solutions without success and want access to doctor-trusted ingredients like oral minoxidil or specialized anti-androgens like spironolactone.

My Hers hair growth quiz review

I will say this process took longer than I wanted. And sure, maybe I’m a millennial with a TikTok attention span but time is money, and it took 10 minutes of my time.

After the initial quiz of several questions, the process moves into a formal 100% online intake. This is where you connect with a licensed healthcare provider to determine if a prescription is appropriate.

You will provide a detailed medical history, including any cardiovascular issues, as ingredients like minoxidil can affect blood flow.

For certain prescription-strength treatments, you may be required to upload clear photos of your hair and a valid ID. Once submitted, a provider in your state reviews your profile, saving you the time of a traditional dermatology waiting room or pharmacy line (praise be!).

But it’s important to know what is in each product and how it will interact with your body, because ingredients, such as Finasteride, can increase depression risk. Obviously, this is not something hair growth companies will shout from the rooftops, but it’s something we want you to be aware of so you can decide whether it’s best for you.

A critical point for your review is the FDA disclosure telling you that these products, and the FDA, neither approve nor verify the safety, effectiveness or quality of compounded drugs. While the individual active ingredients are widely studied, the specific combined formulation you receive hasn’t undergone the standard FDA drug approval process.

Safety concerns and side effects

Safety is paramount, especially regarding reproductive health. Hers products are generally not recommended for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant. Common side effects for topicals include scalp redness or irritation. For oral minoxidil, some women may experience “hypertrichosis,” which is a small amount of extra hair growth on the face or body. Additionally, almost all users should expect temporary shedding in the first 2–4 weeks. This is a normal part of the process where the scalp clears out old, weak hairs to make room for the new growth cycle.

Is it worth it?

Success with Hers is a marathon, not a sprint. So if you are using a once-daily foam or a compounded biotin gummy, you can expect to see progress in 3 to 6 months. The active ingredients work by extending the growth phase and shortening the resting phase of your follicles. It is essential to keep the routine going to see progress. If you stop treatment, your hair will eventually return to its previous thinning pattern.

With the Hers app, you get ongoing support and reminders, allowing you to message providers with questions or adjust your plan as your hair begins to transform. For many, it’s a viable solution that allows one to aggressively treat hair loss without having to wait months for a doctor’s appointment.
