How NASCAR’s Kyle Busch Spent His Final Days: Celebrating Kids’ Birthdays, Races and More

Before Kyle Busch’s unexpected death, the NASCAR driver spent his final days with loved ones and competing in his sport.

NASCAR confirmed that Busch died at age 41 on May 21, 2026, after being hospitalized with a “severe illness.”

“We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport’s greatest and fiercest drivers,” NASCAR said in a statement via X. “We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community.”

Busch is survived by wife Samantha as well as their son, Brexton, 11, and daughter, Lennix, 4.

An official cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Kyle Busch Celebrated Son Brexton’s Birthday

Busch’s final Instagram post was a celebratory message to Brexton in honor of his 11th birthday on May 18.

“Happy Birthday Brexton!!!” the racecar driver wrote alongside a carousel of photos of Busch and his family. “Your mom & I are so proud of who you’re turning out to be! You’re the best kid on & off the track, you amaze us every day. Keep doing what you’re doing and there is no limit to what you’ll accomplish! Love you buddy!”

Kyle Busch Shared a Loving Message When Daughter Lennix Turned 4

While celebrating Mother’s Day 2026, Busch also wished daughter Lennix a happy birthday.

“Happy Birthday to our crazy Lennix,” he wrote via Instagram on May 10. “You keep us laughing, keep us on our toes, and somehow make every day brighter at the same time. I’m lucky to do life with you girls. Love you all more than you know!!”

Kyle Busch Last Raced 4 Days Before His Death

Busch competed in his final match at the NASCAR All-Star Race on May 17 at the Dover International Speedway. Two days before, he participated in a truck series where he won the EcoSave 200.

Kyle Busch Shared a Sentimental Message After Last Race

Following his final NASCAR race, Busch shared a message with fans reflecting the potential end of his career.

“You never know when the last one is,” he told reporters of his legacy on the raceway.

Kyle Busch Was Hospitalized Before His Death

Busch’s family announced via X that the driver was hospitalized due to a “severe illness.”

“Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization,” the statement posted on May 21 read. “He is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation.”

Busch was scheduled to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 on May 24. Busch’s team, Richard Childress Racing, announced that Austin Hill would be taking his place.

“Kyle Busch’s health is our upmost priority and he and his family have the full resources of RCR behind them,” RCR said in a statement posted via X. “Kyle is an integral part of our organization and we wish him a safe and speedy recovery. His No. 8 Chevrolet will be ready and waiting for him. We’re thankful to Austin Hill for stepping in to drive the No. 8 Chevrolet this weekend. Please keep Kyle and the Busch family in your prayers, and help us respect the family’s privacy at this time.”
