Giants sign Najee Harris in intriguing addition to crowded running back room

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 18, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

If three’s a crowd, what do you call the Giants running back room now that Najee Harris is part of it?

The Giants signed the four-time 1,000-yard rusher Tuesday, The Post confirmed, to join Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary in an overcrowded room of fan favorites, draft picks and free-agent investments.

Harris, whose 2025 season with the Chargers was cut short by a torn Achilles in Week 3, worked out for the Giants on Monday.

He and head coach John Harbaugh have a long history on opposite sides of the Ravens-Steelers rivalry.

“I felt like the hair on the back of my neck stood up when I saw him over there, you know?” Harbaugh quipped. “He’s a big dude. So, yes, he’s coming back from the Achilles injury he had with my brother (Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh). And he looks good in the workout. He’s not back 100 percent. He’s not in football shape yet.”

But the Giants were willing to take a less-than-ready Harris.

Signing Harris could be seen as a reaction to losing fourth-stringer Dante Miller for the season to a groin injury. But the Giants could have filled that spot with younger legs.

Harris, 28, is a challenger for carries and shows that the Giants’ interest in adding another top-of-the-depth-chart option was real this offseason.

The Giants showed interest in Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker before his free-agent price (three years, $43 million) topped their comfort level, and did lots of pre-draft homework on Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love in case he was still available at pick No. 5 (the Cardinals took him at No. 3).

“He’s a decorated vet,” Harbaugh said. “And with those guys, generally, you just have to kind of see where they’re at when you get them.”

Skattebo has run strong in his return from a broken tibia last season, Tracy is coming off back-to-back 1,000 yard-from-scrimmage seasons to begin his career and Singletary (4,923 career rushing yards) took a pay cut this offseason to stick with the Giants after initially signing three-year, $16.5 million contract to replace Saquon Barkley.
