Former NFL player Demetrius Byrd has been arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and is currently being held in a Miami-Dade jail.
Byrd, who is from Miami-Dale County, was booked Monday around 2 p.m., per an arrest record, following an incident on a Miami Beach bus at Abbott Avenue and Indian Creek Drive, where police said the former LSU player got in a heated argument with another passenger.
The incident escalated when Byrd allegedly took out a silver multi-tool from his pocket and opened a blade before saying to the victim, “Who wants to die?” as he walked toward him, per the arrest report.
The victim told police that when he boarded the bus Byrd was yelling at other passengers and he attempted to de-escalate the situation by talking to the former pro.
The victim told him to be quiet and Byrd responded by pulling out the tool.
Byrd, 40, was handed a $5,000 bond following his hearing for the assault charge, but he remains detained as he is required to appear before a judge for an outstanding warrant in a separate domestic violence case.
His NFL career was brief after an injury suffered in a major car accident just before the 2009 NFL Draft derailed his career.
Byrd would be drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the seventh round, yet spent his single season as an NFL player on the non-football injury list before he was released by the team in 2010.
He attended Miami Central High School and led the county in receiving yards before moving on to LSU.
Byrd won a national championship with the Tigers in 2007 and famously caught the game-winning 22-yard touchdown with only one second remaining to best Auburn.
He wrapped up his college career with 72 catches for 1,134 yards and 11 touchdowns.
