A former English Premier League (EPL) defender and his family were threatened with a knife and robbed of approximately $177,000 worth of jewelry at their Portugal home Friday, according to The Sun.
Jan Bednarek, who plays for Portuguese team Porto and previously suited up for Aston Villa, reportedly returned home from dinner with his wife, Julia, and his daughter when they encountered the robber.
They were not harmed, according to the report, and police were called.
Bednarek shared Friday to his Instagram Story a repost of his wife’s Story showing the couple at what appeared to be an art gallery, although the date of the visit is not specified.
It appears he has not commented on the situation on social media.
Bednarek, 30, helped Porto win the Primeira Liga title earlier this month by scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Alverca that secured the championship.
The Poland native also plays for the Polish national team, and has made his most career appearances for Southampton — which plays in the secondary English level — since joining the team in 2017.
He made just three appearances for Aston Villa in the EPL after joining the team in 2022 on a loan, and has suited up for Porto since joining the team in 2025.
Bednarek left South Hampton in an attempt to help his mental health.
“Staying at Southampton, I was definitely in a worse place mentally. I needed it (move away),” he told dailyecho.co.uk in 2022. “I was coming back home tired and angry. I wasn’t my real self. Now, the old Janek is back. I’m happy and content.
Bednarek and his wife married in June 2022, and welcomed a daughter, Lilly, in August 2021 as seen in photos on his Instagram account.
His account features plenty of photos of the three, including a post four days ago in celebration of Porto’s clincher.
