Exclusive | Gavin Newsom threatened by feds with audit over campaign travel records

Gavin Newsom’s political roadshow just hit a federal speed bump.

The Federal Election Commission sent a letter last week demanding more information about tens of thousands of dollars in travel reimbursements reported by the California governor’s Campaign for Democracy PAC — warning that the political action committee could face an audit or enforcement action if it fails to adequately explain the spending.

Federal political watchdogs sent the letter as Newsom — who along with his wife is the focus of Department of Justice investigations — launched a tour of the South, including meetings with black elected officials and community leaders in Alabama and political rallies in South Carolina.

Newsom’s camp touted the trip as an effort to ramp up support for Democrats ahead of November’s midterm elections, but the governor is widely expected to run for president in 2028 — and South Carolina was recently selected to hold the first Democratic presidential primary in January 2028. Newsom openly acknowledged his White House ambitions during the trip.

The timing of the FEC letter puts a spotlight on the surging political expenses surrounding Newsom as he approaches the end of his governorship — and on a growing national political operation stocked with members of his inner circle.

Federal watchdogs specifically flagged payments described as “Travel and Event Reimbursement,” saying federal disclosure rules may require campaigns to identify the businesses that ultimately received reimbursed money.

The commission ordered the PAC to provide the “missing or clarifying information” by Oct. 6, or explain when additional itemization was not required.

“Failure to adequately respond” could result in an audit, the FEC warned, adding that failure to comply with federal law could also lead to enforcement action.

The FEC’s letter was sent to Analea Patterson, a former cabinet secretary and senior counselor in Newsom’s office who was installed as treasurer of Campaign for Democracy PAC in April. Federal records confirm Patterson took over as treasurer that month.

She is married to Newsom’s current chief of staff, Nathan Barankin.

Newsom’s broader network of Campaign for Democracy entities has amassed roughly $14 million, according to the most recent filings, while financing political advertising, polling, staff, travel and other activities as the governor expands his national political footprint.

The PAC has tapped a number of current and former Newsom staffers who are helping to build his profile, partly through attention-grabbing out of state trips like a book tour earlier this year for his memoir, “Young Man in a Hurry.”

Lindsey Cobia, one of Newsom’s longest-serving political advisers and a former deputy chief of staff, is among the biggest beneficiaries of his political operation, receiving roughly $334,000 from the PAC in 2025 alone — including a single salary-and-bonus payment of more than $213,000 in December.

Campaign for Democracy PAC reported more than $73,000 in payments specifically described as “Travel and Event Reimbursement” between April and June, including roughly $56,453 paid directly to seven individuals, according to The California Post’s review.

Payments included more $12,600 to Bradley Alexander, $12,474 to Elise Aliotti and just over $12,000 to Brianna Jahangiri.

Isaac “Izzy” Gardon, Newsom’s communications director who has reduced his role in the Governor’s Office to work for the political operation, received $9,334.62 in “Travel and Event Reimbursement” payments, according to The Post’s review of committee campaign filings.

The filing also lists another $16,552 in reimbursements to three firms: SGR Consulting, Bertolina & Barnato and Click Strategies.

The FEC letter does not accuse Newsom or his PAC of violating federal law.

“This is a routine disclosure request for additional information,” Gardon told The Post in a statement. “The PAC is fully compliant and will respond.”

Campaign for Democracy PAC had $7.1 million in cash on hand as of June 30. FEC records show the PAC spent nearly $344,000 between April and the end of June.

Meanwhile, Newsom’s political operation continued to churn on social media Tuesday, saying that the governor has raised $2.3 million for Democrats across the South since 2023.

“Democrats CAN WIN in red states — if they have the resources to compete,” the governor-backing Newsom News account wrote on X.

Using government staffers in part-time political roles is not unusual, but Newsom’s sprawling political operations have drawn heavily from longtime members of his Capitol orbit.

While managing the governor’s PAC, Patterson was also involved in negotiations over California’s proposed billionaire tax, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Newsom opposes the wealth tax, but his team failed to keep the measure off the November ballot.

The Post previously found that major donors to Newsom’s political committees and his wife’s nonprofit frequently landed gubernatorial appointments, with some receiving coveted state posts within days or weeks of making large contributions.

Now the FEC is demanding the PAC’s spending receipts.
