After Every Year After ended on a shocking cliffhanger, questions have swirled about where the series could go.

“I think that’s really that’s up to Amy [B. Harris] and Carley [Fortune],” Aurora Perrineau, who plays Chantal on the show, exclusively told Us Weekly, referencing the showrunner and the Every Summer After author, respectively. “I think whatever the fans of the show end up wanting is really what should be.”
The beloved story, which has dual timelines, follows Percy (Sadie Soverall) heading back to Barry’s Bay after learning about the death of ex Sam’s (Matt Cornett) mom. As she returns to her childhood vacation spot, Percy is forced to confront lingering feelings for her ex — and the painful aftermath of their split, which involves Sam’s brother, Charlie (Michael Bradway).
Along the way, Sam and Percy’s respective BFFs — Chantal (Perrineau) and Jordie (Joseph Chiu) — navigate their own budding romance. For Chiu, seeing more of his onscreen love interest Chantal’s backstory would be of interest.
“I would love to see Chantal’s backstory of how she became the hard-headed lawyer that she is,” Chiu exclusively told Us, before weighing in on his own character’s background. “I had discussions with Amy, when I first arrived, on Jordie’s backstory. How his parents are divorced and stuff like that. I think it’d be really interesting.”
Perrineau chimed in, adding, “I think people’s characters would be way more fleshed out in the following season.”
The ending of season 1 certainly sets up a next season, with the cliffhanger of Charlie seemingly experiencing a health emergency after seeing the photo of him, Sam and Percy from many summers ago. (Readers know that the photo was taken by none other than Alice, who becomes Charlie’s love interest in author Fortune’s novel One Golden Summer.)
Every Summer After author Fortune, whose book was adapted for the show, also weighed in on the future of the series — and whether a potential next season could center around a different love story (think: Charlie and Alice or Jordie and Chantal).
“I would leave Amy to answer that. It’s my job to hold the books close, where I take my characters may be different, from where Amy takes those characters,” Fortune, 42, shared during an exclusive interview with Us. “So I will keep my envisioning to the book world.”
