Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s Red Bulls role changing amid Julian Hall’s breakout

News RoomBy News RoomMarch 22, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

A youth movement for Red Bull New York has meant a new role for one of the club’s key players from 2025.

The expectation had been that Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who led the Red Bulls in scoring last year, would be a key piece for this year’s attack, but the breakout start to the year for Julian Hall has flipped that idea on its head.

Outside of the third game of the season, Choupo-Moting has come off the bench late in matches, a stark contrast for someone who started 31 of the club’s 33 regular-season matches the season prior.

Red Bulls head coach Michael Bradley described Choupo-Moting as “an absolute top professional in every way” when asked by The Post how the striker has adapted to his new role coming off the bench.

“He is an incredible teammate. The example that he sets for everybody, even at his age and his experience, just the enthusiasm he walks in here with every day,” Bradley told The Post. “The way that he walks out onto the training field every day, of course, the quality that he still has. And when decisions haven’t necessarily gone in his favor, he hasn’t bat an eye.”

Choupo-Moting did not play in Saturday’s 6-1 loss to Charlotte after averaging 24 minutes through the first four games.

He scored his first goal of the year in the club’s 1-1 draw against Toronto FC earlier this month in a dramatic goal in stoppage time.

Idan Toklomati, Kerwin Vargas, Pep Biel, Wilfried Zaha and Archie Goodwin each scored for Charlotte FC.

Hall scored the Red Bulls’ only goal of the game.

Bradley said that Choupo-Moting’s role was not indefinite and “nothing is set in stone.”

“We always look at things on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis and try to figure out the best way to put it all together for where we are in that moment,” he said.

Teammate and fellow Red Bull veteran Emil Forsberg noted that the biggest thing for any player in a situation like that is to just “stay confident.”

“Believe in yourself, that’s the only thing, and just do your best at every training,” Forsberg told The Post. “You can’t moan, you can’t be [this] or that. You have to do the best you can and that’s why we have so many guys who set a perfect example. For me, Choupo is in every way exceptional. The way he works as a human and also as a soccer player, for me, is incredible.”

Choupo-Moting has earned praise early on this season for his work with the club’s young crop of players.

Adri Mehmeti, all of 17 years old, credited Choupo-Moting for pushing him during training.

That was something that Choupo-Moting had mentioned before the season, wanting to help mentor the Red Bulls’ rising stars.

“He has shown incredible support and really goes out of his way with our young attacking players,” Bradley said, mentioning specifically Hall and forward Tanner Rosborough. “All of our young players, but the young attacking ones especially. To help them, to mentor them and so again, we are really lucky to have Choupo in every way.”
