Enes Kanter slams WNBA ‘double standard’ in fiery Sophie Cunningham defense

Enes Kanter Freedom continues to voice his support for Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham.

Freedom reposted a New York Times tweet of a column from The Athletic on X, calling for the Fever to drop Cunningham if they want “to go back to being a basketball team.”

“A woman attacking another woman for standing up for women,” Freedom wrote in the repost. “All Sophie Cunningham said was that biological men should stay out of women’s sports and she answered honestly, something many of her colleagues are too afraid to do.”

Freedom went on to say that Cunningham’s actions this season have been courageous and compared them to Colin Kaepernick, Steph Curry, Steve Kerry, and LeBron James when they speak out on political issues.

“@Sophaller exercised her First Amendment rights, and now she could potentially be blackballed by the @WNBA,” Freedom wrote. “The double standard is obvious.”

In July, Cunningham revealed in an interview with ESPN that she believes the WNBA should not allow transgender athletes to play in the league despite the WNBA not having a single-player that identifies as transgender.

“I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men,” she told ESPN.

Cunningham doubled down on her comments shortly after, while denying that she has any animosity toward trans people.

Since then, the reaction has been a mixed response as she was showered in boos by fans of the Portland Fire a few weeks after she made her comments.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who hosts the show “First Take,” has voiced his support for Cunningham, as he said a male transitioning to a female and competing in the WNBA “is clearly unfair to women.”

Freedom has also made strides to help Cunningham’s cause, as he submitted a document in August, asking the WNBA to accept his “decision to enter the player pool for the 2027 WNBA Draft” as a transgender player.
