Did Whoop get whooped? Google just dropped $99 Fitbit Air — and it runs with Gemini

Don’t be surprised if you have to do a double-take.

The wearable market is flooded with all kinds of health-tracking devices, from rings and watches to smart glasses. A 2022 consumer survey found that about half of American households already own some kind of health tracker, and the latest to enter the space with a more minimalist design is the Fitbit Air.

Social media users are already comparing the new ultra-light, micro-adjustable Air band to the popular Whoop band, which has been praised by fitness enthusiasts and biohackers alike for its screen-free design and advanced health metrics.

According to Google, the Air is “designed to sit silently on your wrist, taking it all in without disrupting your flow or your style.”

However, unlike the $239 Whoop, which also requires a mandatory membership of up to $40 a month, the Fitbit Air has no required subscription to track your basic vitals and health data — that’s already included.

Shoppers seem to be taking well to the new device. The Air is currently available for pre-order for $99 ahead of its May 26 release, and it’s already the No. 1 new release on Amazon’s charts.

Despite the accessible price point, the Air still boasts advanced sensors that can track and calculate everything from heart rate and skin temperature to step count, sleep stages and daily readiness.

The device features a water- and sweat-resistant coating, and holds up to a 7-day battery life for continuous tracking. To unlock its full range of features, users can also opt for Google Health Premium for an additional $10 a month.

This subscription grants access to more advanced data visualizations as well as health coaching powered by Gemini. It’s this software that may be Air’s real selling point; built-in coaching powered by artificial intelligence that analyzes your metrics and delivers personalized tips.

It’s essentially like having a personal trainer within arm’s reach — users can ask their Health Coach anything, whether it’s to design a leg-day workout, help them meditate or explain why they’re tired today.

The Air Band is currently offered in four signature colorways: obsidian, berry, lavender, and a special-edition “rye” shade, which was launched in collaboration with Stephen Curry. Bands can be purchased separately or alongside the Air Tracker.
