A Department of Homeland Security counterterrorism official was placed on administrative leave Wednesday amid an internal probe of her having billed a “sugar daddy” ex-boyfriend out of $40,000.
“Julia Varvaro is on administrative leave as a result of the investigation and she is no longer serving in her capacity as a Deputy Assistant Secretary at DHS,” an official said Wednesday after the Daily Mail first reported the accusation.
Her ex-boyfriend, identified by the outlet as divorced business executive Robert B., had matched with the 29-year-old DHS deputy assistant for counterterrorism on the dating app Hinge last December.
The two allegedly dated for three months and went on excursions to South Carolina, San Diego, Italy and Aruba — but the jilted ex now claims he was only used as a “sugar daddy” for her posh lifestyle.
Robert B. later filed a complaint with DHS’ Office of Inspector General, which has not confirmed or denied the existence of an investigation.
Varvaro, who could not immediately be reached for comment, has called the accusations a bunch of “crap” put together by her “mad ex-boyfriend.”
“It’s just really weird,” she told the Mail.
