Chargers turn San Diego homecoming into tribute for Billy Ray Smith

The Los Angeles Chargers’ return to San Diego will carry a tribute to one of the franchise’s most beloved former players.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh announced that players will wear blue circular “BR” decals on their white practice helmets during the team’s two days in San Diego, honoring former linebacker Billy Ray Smith Jr., who recently died at 64.

His family said he died following a battle with dementia caused by CTE.

Smith spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Chargers after the organization selected him fifth overall out of Arkansas in 1983.

He appeared in 126 games, made 111 starts and finished with 26.5 sacks, 15 interceptions and 14 fumble recoveries. Smith was named the Chargers’ Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986 before earning team MVP honors in 1987.

The two-time All-American was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and selected for the Chargers’ 50th Anniversary Team.

Smith remained deeply connected to San Diego after retiring in 1992, building a second career as a television sportscaster and radio host. He and his wife, Kimberly Hunt, also supported numerous local charities.

Chargers owner Dean Spanos remembered Smith as “larger than life,” praising the smile, laughter and generosity that made him a cherished teammate, friend and community figure.

The San Diego trip also includes the inaugural USAA Salute to Service Boot Camp at USD’s Torero Stadium. Following practice, 200 local military members will receive an opportunity to train like Chargers players and compete in NFL Combine-style drills.

For two days, the Chargers will reconnect with San Diego through service while carrying the initials of a man who never stopped calling the city home.
