The artificial intelligence boom is changing the way people work, communicate and live — and apparently for one tech-obsessed dad, reading to his son.
Alvin Sng, a software engineer at San Francisco-based AI research lab Factory, recounted on social media a conversation ohe had with his wife.
“Can you read our baby a book?” his wife asked, according to Sng’s now-deleted post on X.
The dad replies that he can just play an audiobook, but his wife objects, noting it won’t be in his voice.
“Me: I can train a voice model,” he responded in the post. “Parenting hits different when you work in AI.”
The post earned swift backlash, with many critics accusing Sng of being a bad dad.
“Absolutely insanity,” commented finance professional Andrew Lynch. “These people’s brains are broken.”
“Extremely bleak,” added Aaron Fritschner, a deputy chief of staff for Virginia Rep. Don Beyer.
“Me: You are a horrible father,” another added.
Some used the moment to rage about AI in general, which has taken on a more negative perception in politics and culture.
“Truly can’t get over the fact that this technology came in and instead of using it to replace fixing toilets or folding clothes, people are using it to make movies and read to their kids,” one user commented. “This is maybe the saddest thing I’ve read on this site.”
Others who said using AI would have lasting consequences on the child.
“These freaks are going to to raise a generation of sociopaths unable to feel human love,” wrote influencer Michael Burns.
After deleting the post, Sng responded to the outrage a day later.
“Ok, enough jokes for a while. I’ll go back to reading bedtime stories for now,” he wrote on X.
Interactions between children and AI have come under increasing scrutiny amid reports of chatbots encouraging children to commit suicide. California even enacted a law recently trying to put more guardrails.
