California hospitals dominate America’s elite medical rankings

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 6, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

California is proving it’s not just a destination for sunshine, surf and celebrities — it’s also home to some seriously star-powered hospitals.

The Golden State is having a major medical moment.

It snagged more spots on America’s elite hospital honor roll than any other state, with six California medical centers landing among the nation’s top 20 hospitals in the newly released 2026-27 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings.

That means the Bear Flag State accounted for a whopping 30% of all Honor Roll hospitals nationwide — beating out every other state and giving the rest of the country some serious health-care envy.

The rankings didn’t just hand out gold stars — hospitals had to battle it out across nearly 4,500 facilities nationwide, with U.S. News weighing everything from survival rates and nursing quality to patient experience and performance in 14 specialties and 23 procedures and conditions.

California’s medical dream team showed up from the Bay Area to Los Angeles and San Diego, proving the state’s healthcare bragging rights aren’t limited to one sunny slice of the map.

The six Cali hospitals earning Honor Roll bragging rights stretched from Southern California to the Bay Area, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles, Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, UC San Diego Health’s La Jolla, Hillcrest and East Campus Medical Centers in San Diego, and UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco.

Together, they made the West Coast state the clear MVP of the rankings — with more Honor Roll hospitals than any other in the country.

New York came in second with three hospitals on the list, while Massachusetts and Illinois each claimed two.

Other states, including Florida, Texas, Arizona and Pennsylvania, had just one hospital make the cut.

California’s medical crown wasn’t just national — it was local, too.

Los Angeles boasted 25 Best Regional Hospitals, second only to the New York City area, which had 28.

Across California, hospitals also topped major metro rankings, with Cedars-Sinai and UCLA Ronald Reagan leading in Los Angeles, UC Davis Medical Center topping Sacramento, UC San Diego Health leading San Diego and UCSF Health taking the top spot in San Francisco.

Among the state’s standout stars, Cedars-Sinai earned top-50 national rankings in 10 specialties and received the highest “High Performing” rating in all 23 procedures and conditions evaluated by U.S. News.

Meanwhile, UCSF Health continued its longtime streak, earning a spot on the Honor Roll for the 30th consecutive year and ranking 10 specialties among the nation’s top 10.

U.S. News said the rankings are designed to help Californian patients identify highly rated care closer to home.

Still, the rankings come with an important caveat: patients don’t necessarily need to seek out an Honor Roll hospital for every condition.

Hundreds of regional hospitals also earned high marks for specific specialties and procedures.

The Golden State’s hospital dominance isn’t just about bragging rights — California has also been recognized for keeping patients safe.

As The Post previously reported in March, California was among the top states with the most hospitals earning Healthgrades’ 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award, which honors facilities ranking among the top 10% nationwide for patient safety.

The award recognized 438 hospitals across 40 states for excelling at preventing serious, avoidable complications during hospital stays, based on 13 patient safety indicators.

California joined Texas, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania as the states with the highest number of award-winning hospitals — a reflection of both the state’s size and the strength of its major medical hubs.

Healthgrades found that patients treated at these top-performing hospitals faced significantly lower risks for several serious safety events, including falls resulting in fractures, procedure-related collapsed lungs, catheter-related bloodstream infections and pressure sores.
