California Democrats vow to use ‘every power’ to prosecute ICE agents, pull funding

News RoomBy News RoomJanuary 26, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Furious California Democrats are vowing to crack down on Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after the killing of a Minnesota nurse, saying they’ll prosecute federal agents who step out of line.

Rep. Ro Khanna became the latest Dem to call for prosecution of “criminal” ICE agents as he visited Minneapolis on Monday to thank protesters and rally support for his immigration agenda, his office confirmed.

“Only if Congress fights with every legal tool at our disposal including lawsuits in the courts, like we are doing with the Epstein files, can we stop this madness,” the lefty lawmaker wrote on X.

Khanna wants to revoke funding for ICE and the Department of Homeland Security. He also called for the impeachments of US Attorney General Pam Bondi and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem in response to the chaos in Minnesota, according to a statement on X.

The Silicon Valley congressman echoed East Bay Rep. Eric Swalwell, who claimed he’d strip driver’s licenses from ICE agents and use “every power” to prosecute officers at a forum for California gubernatorial candidates earlier this month.

“I will direct law enforcement to use every power to prosecute [ICE officers] for battery, false imprisonment and murder,” Swalwell said.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said that prosecutors — especially in Democratic-run cities — should expect a surge in federal law enforcement and be prepared to take legal action if agents break the law.

“This has been escalating for some time, and [federal immigration agents] have been given the belief that they have absolute immunity, which is not actually a legal concept that exists,” Jenkins told The California Post on Monday. “And there has to be an understanding that in this country we operate under a set of laws, and that those laws have to be enforced — it doesn’t matter who you are.”

House Democrats last week failed to block an appropriations bill that included $10 billion in funding for ICE, part of a broader $1.2 trillion government funding package.

Swalwell, Khanna and other California House Dems opposed the funding bill, which passed 220-207 with only seven Democrats voting in favor.

Senate Dems, including Sen. Adam Schiff, said they’ll block funding for President Trump’s immigration crackdown — even if it means shutting down the government — ahead of a vote Friday to avert a partial shutdown.

“I’m not giving ICE or Border Patrol another dime,” Schiff, a Democrat, said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“Anyone who votes to give them more money to do this will share in the responsibility and see … more Americans die in our cities, as a result,” Schiff said.

California state lawmakers have attempted to rein in ICE, though some of those efforts are in legal limbo.

Gov. Gavin Newsom last year signed a law banning law enforcement officers, including federal immigration agents, from wearing masks or other face coverings while conducting official business. Los Angeles’ progressive Board of Supervisors passed a similar ban last year.

The Trump administration has refused to comply and filed a lawsuit over the state ban, arguing it threatens the safety of officers.
