Bombardier stock sinks after Trump threatens to shut Canadian jet maker out of US

News RoomBy News RoomSeptember 8, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

Bombardier shares tumbled Tuesday after President Trump threatened to shut the Canadian business jet maker out of the US market unless it starts building its planes in America.

The Montreal-based manufacturer’s stock opened down 6.4% in Toronto before clawing back some of the losses.

The shares were recently down 3.7% at about $219 Canadian, or around $158.50 in US dollars.

“NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES!” Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social.

“If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a ‘piggybank’.”

But any crackdown could also ricochet through Bombardier’s sprawling US-based operation, which includes about 3,500 employees, 2,800 suppliers and more than $2.5 billion in annual spending with American companies.

The company has been expanding that footprint even as Trump pressures it to manufacture more domestically.

Bombardier opened a nearly 46,000-square-foot component plant in Moorpark, Calif., in 2025 and acquired Velocity Maintenance Solutions in February, adding a 35,000-square-foot Delaware maintenance hangar and a fleet of 14 mobile repair trucks.

Its Wichita operation has also undergone a major transformation since Bombardier ended production of its storied Learjet line in 2022.

Instead of abandoning the Kansas site, the company designated Wichita its US headquarters and established Bombardier Defense there, turning the facility toward special-mission aircraft, engineering and customer support.

Bombardier has a significant Pentagon relationship through the Air Force’s Battlefield Airborne Communications Node program. Its US subsidiary received a contract worth up to roughly $464.8 million covering as many as six Global 6000 aircraft for conversion into E-11A communications platforms.

The company said following Trump’s latest threat that it intends to keep investing in its American operations.

“Our plan is to continue to invest in our people, our customers and the communities in which we operate across the country,” Bombardier said.

Kansas alone is home to more than 1,000 Bombardier workers, according to Sen. Jerry Moran, while the Red Oak, Texas, operation employed more than 600 people when Bombardier disclosed a site-level headcount in 2021.

Moran said he contacted the Trump administration following the president’s threat to highlight Bombardier’s importance to Kansas.

Rep. Ron Estes, whose district includes Wichita, also pushed back against aerospace tariffs.

“Bombardier supports an extensive American supply chain, boasts maintenance and repair capabilities across the US, and is trusted by our military for critical national security missions,” Estes wrote on X.

The latest Bombardier broadside landed as the trade fight between Washington and Ottawa escalated sharply.

Canada on Tuesday imposed retaliatory tariffs of between 15% and 50% on roughly $20 billion of US goods after the two countries failed to reach a new trade agreement last month.

The Post has sought comment from the White House.
