Bo Bichette says Mets hitters have to get ‘a little dirty’ offensively

News RoomBy News RoomApril 15, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

LOS ANGELES — As the Mets try to awaken offensively, Bo Bichette would like to see the lineup take a less conservative approach.

“I think sometimes as hitters we get too invested in having a great approach and not chasing and looking pretty as hitters,” Bichette told The Post on Tuesday. “And sometimes you have got to get a little dirty out there and sometimes look bad for the possibility of looking really good and take some chances.”

The Mets hadn’t scored in 20 innings before a Francisco Lindor hit a leadoff homer in a 2-1 loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Bichette, who went 1-for-4 in Tuesday’s loss, was asked to further elaborate on players needing to “get a little dirty” during at-bats.

“It’s a mindset,” he said. “You can either choose to go in there and try to be too smart and try to look good, or you can decide to get in there and compete. At the end of the day, it’s a choice.”

Bichette, after a slow start, was on the upswing before going hitless in seven at-bats over the team’s previous two games entering Monday. He began the day with a .727 OPS in April.

“You either believe in yourself or not, and this team, we believe in each other,” Bichette said. “There’s a lot of talent here. Losing sucks. People are not happy, but we know how good we are, and it’s just a shift in mindset.”

Joey Gerber was placed on the injured list with a finger blister, a day after pitching two scoreless innings in his Mets debut.

The Mets recalled Austin Warren from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Gerber’s spot in the bullpen.

Jared Young was unavailable because of left knee discomfort that could land him on the injured list.

Carlos Mendoza said the team was awaiting MRI exam results on Young, who has provided a lefty bat utilized to platoon with Mark Vientos.

Team owner Steve Cohen was on the field during batting practice for a second straight day as he completed his visit to Southern California.

Cohen hugged Francisco Lindor and conversed with several players and staff members. Cohen and agent Scott Boras (a regular at Dodger Stadium) conversed a day earlier.

Mendoza said he hasn’t considered moving the slumping Lindor, who hit a solo homer in the loss, from the leadoff spot.

Francisco Alvarez moved to fifth in the lineup, and slumping Mark Vientos slid to seventh.
