Sony’s bringing back the nostalgia.

First introduced in 1979, both the Walkman and the original MDR-3 headphones were revolutionary launches, made for those wanting their music on the go.

Now, nearly 50 years later, the MDR-3R is a nod to the original MDR-3s, with a slightly upgraded build. They retain the original design (seriously, you almost can’t tell the two apart), but they now pack a seamless USB-C connection and a built-in microphone for calls. All I can think of is how cool these will look when I take my next video call from my laptop.

You’ll have the same blue and orange ear pads on the headphones, reminiscent of the original design. Plus, they feature similar reengineered 23mm drivers like the originals to deliver sound quality close to the pair from years ago. Of course, the focus here is less on cutting-edge audio features and more on recreating the original listening experience, with balanced sound and natural vocals. If you’re one for nostalgia, this one will take you right back to your Walkman days.

I spent some time listening to music on these, and while they don’t compare to modern noise-canceling headphones, there was something special about feeling like I was back in my childhood, with my Walkman in tow, listening to iio’s “Rapture” on repeat.

Portions of the headphones are also made with recycled plastic materials, and the brand is even launching a limited-edition “Stranger Things” version.

Featuring the “Stranger Things” logo, red and black ear pads and custom packaging, these headphones emulate what you see in the show, inspired by Max’s signature headphone style. (Perfect for revisting Kate Bush.)

Both versions are available to shop or pre-order at select retailers, and with the resurgence of wired headphones, we anticipate these nostalgic pairs will attract plenty of attention.
