Aubrey Plaza Breaks Silence on Pregnancy, Always Wanted to See What Motherhood Was ‘All About’

News RoomBy News RoomApril 13, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Aubrey Plaza is speaking out days after her pregnancy news broke.

“Well, there’s a baby inside of me,” Plaza, 41, said during an episode of the “SmartLess” podcast on Monday, April 13, revealing her pregnancy news to hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes.

“Today was a big day. I went to the doctor’s today, and my dog also went to the doctor’s,” she continued. “Both of us — my dog’s getting a scan right now. I got a scan earlier. I’m not kidding.”

She added, “She had to get an ultrasound on her stomach. And then I got an ultrasound on my stomach, and there is a baby in there.”

Plaza confirmed that she’s “excited” about being a first-time mom.

“I’ve always wanted to see what that’s all about, you know?” she said. “It just seems so interesting, that whole thing.”

The episode is available now behind the subscriber early access paywall but will be released to the public on Monday, April 20.

People confirmed on April 7 that Plaza is pregnant and set to welcome her first baby with partner Chris Abbott. She is due “this fall,” a source told the publication. Plaza debuted her baby bump while out and about in New York City one day after her pregnancy news was announced.

While it’s unclear when her relationship with Abbott, 40, began, the couple previously worked together on several projects. They first met while starring in the 2020 film Black Bear and later reunited for an Off-Broadway production of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.

Plaza’s pregnancy comes more than one year after her estranged husband, Jeff Baena, died by suicide at age 47 in January 2025. The former couple were married for nearly five years before they separated months prior to his death.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” Plaza’s rep told Us Weekly in a statement following Baena’s death. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”

Plaza spoke candidly about losing Baena during an August 2025 appearance on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast. Poehler, 54, told Plaza that fans wanted to hear from her after Baena’s death.

“You had this terrible, terrible, tragic year. You lost your husband. You’ve been dealing with that, and you’ve been looking for all different ways in which to feel and find support,” Poehler said at the time. “On behalf of all of the people who feel like they know you, and the people who do know you, how are you feeling today?”

Plaza offered an update on how she’s feeling before comparing her grief to the 2025 movie The Gorge, starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy.

“Overall, I’m here, and I’m functioning, and I feel grateful to be moving through the world,” Plaza told listeners. “I think, like, I’m OK, but it’s a daily struggle, obviously.”

She added, “At all times, there’s like a giant ocean of awfulness that’s, like, right there, and I can see it, and sometimes I just wanna dive into it and be in it. And then, sometimes, I just look at it, and sometimes I just try to get away from it.”
