Arch Manning spent part of his media availability on Monday clearing up comments his grandfather had made a few weeks prior.
Former Ole Miss and New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning told Texas Monthly that NFL teams shouldn’t hold their breath to see his grandson in the draft next April — but that’s not a decision that Arch had made as of Tuesday.
“Yeah, I don’t know where he got that from,” Arch told reporters. “He texted me and apologized about that. I’m really just taking it day by day right now.”
Arch is eligible to enter the 2026 NFL Draft and there have been questions about his intentions after the 2025 college football season, his first as the program’s starting quarterback.
Archie later told ESPN that the comment was made as “an assumption.”
“I thought that the thing that I said was that to name Arch to postseason awards and start placing him in the NFL draft was ridiculous when he hadn’t played,” he told the outlet. “But then, of course, then the fact I said that he might be at Texas, that’s just an assumption on my part.
“Arch and I have a really good grandson-grandfather relationship, but I haven’t been part of this football journey.”
Arch is entering the season as the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and was the No. 1-ranked player in the recruiting class of 2023.
He also comes from football royalty with his grandfather, Archie and uncles Peyton and Eli Manning, all of whom are among the NFL’s most storied QBs.
Arch’s tenure as Texas starter will kick off with a bang at the end of the month when the Longhorns face No. 3 Ohio State to start the season, a rematch of last season’s College Football Playoff semifinal in which the Buckeyes were victorious.
