Newlyweds stars real-life couple Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, but the new NBC sitcom didn’t pull inspiration from events in their marriage.
Newlyweds, which premiered in October 2026, follows a free-spirited woman, Jeanie (Leoni), and a buttoned-up professor, James (Daly), who quickly marry after a whirlwind romance. They must then figure out their new normal with assistance from Jeanie’s kids, Poppy (Emma Meisel) and Lolo (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) — and James’ ex-wife, Claudia (Jamie Lee Curtis).
Off screen, Daly, 70, and Leoni, 60, met in 2014 while starring on CBS’ Madam Secretary. Leoni played a former CIA analyst who gets called up to the office of the Secretary of State while Daly was her husband on the show.
“I was like, ‘That’s a cool girl.’ Like, she’s a no-bulls***er,” Daly said on the “Really Famous With Kara Mayer Robinson” podcast in 2021. “She’s here to do this acting work, also. She’s not thinking about her position or anything like that.”
Daly later reflected on their strong connection, telling Us in 2026, “I mean, she looked at me, and she saw me. She just saw right into me, and it scared the hell out of me, actually, because all my defenses and walls came crashing down.”
Daly and Leoni dated for over a decade before tying the knot in 2025. They decided to reunite on Newlyweds, which is a fictional story not based on the pair’s relationship. Newlyweds originally was brought to life by showrunner Gail Lerner — until she revealed she was fired.
“Here’s the good news: I couldn’t be more proud of the new sitcom Newlyweds that I created with the singular Jamie Lee Curtis,” Lerner wrote via Instagram in October. “Premieres 10/23!”
She continued: “Here’s the bad news: I got fired off it today. The reason I’ve been given is ‘creative differences.’ The cloudy part: I’m so sad to be separated from the most joyous TV experience of my life. The cast, crew, and writers are unparalleled.”
Lerner wished the show well despite her sudden departure.
“The silver lining: the first six episodes were made under my leadership, and I wouldn’t change a thing. No one knows what’s going to happen in our meshuganah business, but I predict this show’s gonna be a barn burner,” she continued. “Please check out the first six (and beyond!). If you like them, please let me know! If you don’t, keep it to yourself.”
Lerner’s firing came two weeks before the premiere, and she was later replaced by Bruce Helford.
Newlyweds airs on NBC Fridays at 8:30 p.m. ET. after Reba McEntire‘s hit series Happy’s Place.
