Aaron Donald wants one final answer before committing to Rams return

News RoomBy News RoomAugust 3, 20262 ViewsNo Comments

Aaron Donald’s possible return to the Los Angeles Rams now appears to hinge on one question: Can his body still meet the standard he established during one of the greatest defensive careers in NFL history?

Donald has not officially decided to end his retirement, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the situation continues to move toward a comeback.

“My understanding is he wants to make sure that he can go out and do it before he fully commits,” Rapoport said. “That said, it clearly seems like it’s heading in that direction.”

The 35-year-old has been training and was recently spotted working out at the Rams’ facility, testing how his body responds after spending two seasons away. This latest reporting shows he wants proof that he can still perform near his usual level before signing up for another season.

That optimism aligns with what sources told the California Post over the weekend.

Although the Rams do not know exactly when Donald will decide, sources say an official announcement would not be expected until the middle or end of August.

Sean McVay recently said the arrow was “trending upwards” and indicated the Rams should have greater clarity after leaving Loyola Marymount for their Woodland Hills facility.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer also reported that Donald and McVay have discussed the logistics of a comeback and established a rough timeline. The future Hall of Famer is not expected to join the team during its current portion of training camp, but Breer wrote that “everything’s in play” afterward.

The Rams have enough defensive-line depth to remain patient. Donald would join Myles Garrett, Kobie Turner, Byron Young and Braden Fiske on a unit capable of rotating players without sacrificing its pass rush.

Los Angeles must still address Donald’s contract. He retired with one season and $31.1 million remaining on the three-year, $95 million extension he signed in 2022. That obligation would return to the Rams’ books if he is reinstated, likely requiring the two sides to negotiate a new structure.

Those negotiations could take time, making the timing of Donald’s decision especially important as the Rams work to resolve his contract before the season.

Donald retired after the 2023 season with 111 career sacks, three Defensive Player of the Year awards and eight first-team All-Pro selections. At the time, he said he felt “full” and “complete” and no longer wanted to endure another training camp and 17-game schedule.

The opportunity to chase another championship alongside Garrett appears to have changed the calculation. The motivation and rough timeline are in place. Now Donald needs one final answer from his body before the Rams can announce that No. 99 is back.
