The flagship event of the PGA Tour begins today.

The Players Championship takes place every year about one month before the first PGA Tour Major of the year and features the biggest prize purse on tour — $25 million with $4.5 million reserved for the winner.

Rory McIlroy comes into this year’s Players Championship as the defending champion, winning his second title at TPC Sawgrass just one month before his historic 2025 Masters win.

In addition to McIlroy and 2023-2024 winner Scottie Scheffler, this year’s field includes Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth.

How to watch The Players Championship for free:

If you don’t have cable, you’ll need a live TV streaming service to stream the Players Championship for free.

DIRECTV is our top pick for watching sports live for free — its five-day free trial includes NBC and the Golf Channel. When the trial is over, you’ll pay as low as $59.99/month and gain access to over 90 live channels.

Sling TV is another affordable way to stream live TV; its Select plan includes NBC and starts at $19.99/month. To get the Golf Channel on Sling, you’ll need the Sports Extra add-on ($11.99/month) with either the Blue or Orange base plans.

Other ways to watch and stream the 2026v Players Championship without cable:

As noted above, ESPN+ will carry every day of the Players Championship. ESPN+ is available with both ESPN Unlimited ($29.99/month) and ESPN Select ($12.99/month) plans.
