The Yankees love the idea of adding Mason Miller, who would not only give them baseball’s best closer and back-end combination (with closer David Bednar as setup man) but also a closer for 2027, since Bednar is a free agent.

“I’m pretty happy in San Diego,” Miller said about the Yankees’ apparent interest. “The other 29 teams I’m sure would love to have me. But it’s probably more a matter of what the cost will be.”

If the Padres decide to listen on Miller — at 48-48 they could go either way, buy or sell — the Yankees have a decent, middle-rung prospect list and could match up fairly well with San Diego.

Jasson Domínguez’s stock has fallen since the teams made the Juan Soto trade (Domínguez was deemed untouchable back then), but the Yankees have a solid young pitching group (Will Warren, Ryan Weathers, Elmer Rodríguez, Ben Hess and Carlos Lagrange).
