The Jets fell to the Steelers 34-32 on Sunday to open up the season with a loss. Here are some thoughts and observations from the game:
1. Aaron Glenn was quick to say he does not believe in moral victories, but I do. If there is such a thing as a good loss, this was one for the Jets. I get it being disappointed in what happened in the fourth quarter and yes, the Jets have to clean up the mistakes but overall I’m not sure how you would not be encouraged by how the Jets played.
Here is the biggest thing: they had a functional offense on Sunday. I’ve written a few times leading up to the season that one of the main ways I would evaluate this season is whether the offense was functional. For one week, it was.
Tanner Engstrand looks like has a clue how to call plays and deploy personnel. Justin Fields was better than anyone outside of the Jets expected. The offensive line moved people off the ball and opened up huge holes. Breece Hall looked explosive. Garrett Wilson got open. And the supporting cast made just enough plays.
