PHILADELPHIA — That voice.

This week, it was important to hear that voice spill through the telephone, direct from Naples, Fla., still so full of life and energy, same as it was when he first came to town 50 years ago and invited us to tag along every day with him to the ballpark and the gym.

“Michael,” Warner Wolf said, laughing, “I hope you type fast. I don’t want this to turn into an obituary on us!”

It was a bittersweet week for Wolf, 88, and for many of us in New York of a certain generation. John Sterling, another forever voice, died, leaving behind a warehouse of radio calls and good cheer. Ernie Anastos, a trusted voice on New York television for decades, also passed.
