World Cup fever is contagious.
Since Mexico opened the international soccer tournament with a 2-0 victory against South Africa on Thursday at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, it’s been a party in Mexico.
Fans were seen in the stadium wearing sombreros, the Mexican flag wrapped around their shoulders, their favorite player’s jersey, and even local animals gathered in the excitement.
A video surfaced on social media, hours before the start of the match, of a mom and son walking down the street. As the two walked, they were followed by a duck that wore a Team Mexico jersey.
With only one full day of soccer played in the World Cup, the duck video might go down as one of the best videos of soccer fandom in the tournament.
As the family made its way through the city, more people saw them and realized that their pet duck was rooting for Mexico. Engulfed in excitement, fans couldn’t help but press the record button on their cameras and send the videos out to social media.
Since the World Cup officially kicked off, the Mexico fan base has already delivered many memorable videos.
During a watch party at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a video emerged of fans erupting into a roar after Mexico scored.
The Mexico fever spread all over the United States as watch parties stretched from Philadelphia to the Coliseum.
Another video emerged of other teams’ fans joining in on the fun. One of the watch parties featured a South Korean fan being tossed in the air by the Mexico fans, which was followed up by the Mexican fans breaking out into “Korean” chants.
Mexico had goals by Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez in its victory over South Africa. They are set to take on South Korea on June 18.
