Trump blames Dems for affordability crisis during Iowa rally to kick off midterm support: ‘We can never forget it’

News RoomBy News RoomJanuary 27, 20263 ViewsNo Comments

President Trump spent Tuesday urging Iowa voters to help him finish his term with Republican majorities in Congress — saying Democrats would weaken his immigration crackdown, halt his economic agenda and impeach him if they win the November midterm elections.

“We can never forget what that group of morons did to this country. We can never forget it, and that’s why we’ve got to win the midterms,” Trump said at a rally in Clive outside of Des Moines.

Trump said he was “making America affordable again” — touting lower mortgage and inflation rates and new tax breaks for tips, overtime, Social Security benefits and car loan interest — while rebutting Democratic messaging on “affordability” concerns.

“The first time you heard about it was like a few months ago: ‘This election is all about affordability.’ Well, they’re the ones that caused the problem, but nobody knows that,” he said.

“You know, people forget. So they say, ‘Oh, affordability, let’s vote for the Democrats.’ They caused tremendous price increases.”

Trump warned, “if we lose the midterms, you’ll lose so many of the things that we’re talking about, so many of the assets that we’re talking about, so many of the tax cuts.”

The president hit many of his key campaign points in a largely on-script speech, saying a Democratic triumph “would lead to very bad things.”

“I’m here because I love Iowa, but I’m here because we’re starting a campaign to win the midterms,” he said. “We’re going to really work hard on winning the midterms. We have great candidates.”

Some of those candidates spoke ahead of Trump, who carried Iowa three times in general elections after decades of Democratic-leaning results.

Three of Iowa’s four House seats have narrow Republican advantages and the most at-risk incumbent, Rep. Zach Nunn, served as Trump’s warm-up act. Nunn rode Trump’s coattails to a 3.85 percentage point win in 2024 after a nail-biting .69% lead two years prior.

“We have candidates that rule with common sense, not this craziness. You know, we’re not going to be supporting transgender for all, men and women’s sports and open borders,” Trump said.

Trump basked in the admiration of his audience — claiming at one point that a woman had just gotten “makeup all over” his suit as her “tears were pouring” in celebration of his achievements. He also returned jeers for two hecklers in his audience, calling them “sickos” and “paid insurrectionists.”
