Kliff Kingsbury certainly sounds as if he has enjoyed spending time with the Commanders’ quarterback room this season, to the point where he’d give any of them approval to “marry my hypothetical daughter.”
That would be except for practice squad quarterback Sam Hartman.
“He’s way too good looking,” Kingsbury told reporters during his press conference Thursday.
Hartman, who signed with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent following his collegiate career at Wake Forest and Notre Dame, hasn’t appeared in an NFL game but has been waived and signed — and waived and signed — by Washington throughout each of the last two seasons.
This year, he has started the campaign behind Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota and Josh Johnson in the quarterback room.
“I think it’s huge and you gotta give [quarterbacks coach] Tavita Pritchard, our quarterbacks coach, a lot of credit for building that type of camaraderie in that room,” Kingsbury said when asked about the bond of the Commanders’ quarterback room. “And [assistant quarterbacks coach] David Blough as well, the assistant quarterbacks coach, just truly good guys that like each other. … Just phenomenal people above all else, hard workers, professionals and they’re truly a joy to be around every day.”
It’s the nucleus of the unit that has helped Kingsbury revive his coaching career after getting fired as the Cardinals’ head coach following the 2022 season.
The Commanders finished fifth in the NFL in scoring per game (28.5 points) and collected the seventh-most yards per game (369.6) en route to falling in the NFC Championship game against the Eagles.

While Hartman is still waiting for a chance to make his official NFL debut, he did play in all three preseason games for Washington this year — completing 25-of-46 passes for 207 yards and four interceptions.
After a 1-1 start, Kingsbury and the offense will need to adjust Sunday — when they host the Raiders — after Daniels sustained a knee sprain during their Week 2 loss and was officially ruled out on Friday after missing practice all week.
Mariota, the former No. 2 overall pick in 2015, is set to start.
“Anytime he’s asked to play or practice or even on scout team, he’s been phenomenal,” Kingsbury said of Mariota. “So he treats it like a pro as a leader on the team despite not being the starter, which is hard to do and can’t say enough good things about him. So if he has to go, I’m sure he will be ready.”
