There is a faction of Mets fan who won’t want to hear this, but if things proceed as it began to appear Thursday like they’re going to proceed, the team is not on the verge of trading away Tom Seaver. This isn’t the days leading up to June 15, 1977 — or even the days leading up to Aug. 27, 1992, when another popular Met, David Cone, was exiled to Toronto.
Pete Alonso has been a very good Met; of that there is little debate.
He has been a hugely popular Met; of that there’s even less argument. He embraced being a Met, embraced the fan base, became a visible Met in the community. And last October, he hit a home run that, depending on your point of view, might well have been the most important one in team history.
That’s all a matter of public record.
