The Summer I Turned Pretty reused a Taylor Swift song to set the scene as Belly almost kissed the Fisher brother who isn’t her fiancé.
The Wednesday, August 13, episode of the Prime Video show started with Belly (Lola Tung) sleeping over with Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) at his dad’s apartment. Adam (Tom Everett Scott) wasn’t thrilled by the arrangement, so Belly and Jeremiah took that as a sign that they should start looking for a place of their own.
The search brought up several issues — including the fact that Jeremiah didn’t realize how not paying his credit card bill might affect his credit score. The couple’s options were limited, and soon enough, Belly was back at Cousins with Conrad (Chris Briney).
As wedding planning started to get overwhelming, Conrad noticed that Belly was stressed and wasn’t eating. He secretly reached out to Laurel (Jackie Chung) and convinced her to support Belly even if she still didn’t want her daughter getting married so young.
Elsewhere in the episode, Jeremiah saw Adam with his assistant Kayleigh (Emma Ishta), not knowing that the twosome had an affair before Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) died. It only got more awkward when Adam told Jeremiah and Conrad he planned to bring Kayleigh to the wedding — without realizing Conrad knew about his infidelity.
Back to Belly, her bridal shower got off to a good start when she reconnected with her mom. It took a turn, though, when Laurel confused Jeremiah for his brother during a game meant to show how well Belly knows her fiancé.
The Summer I Turned Pretty confirmed that the tide was truly turning when Belly returned to Cousins right before Conrad got injured surfing. Naturally, Belly and Conrad ended up sharing a rather intimate moment — at least on her end.
Belly helped Conrad with his wound as Swift’s “False God” played in the background. The same song was featured during season 1 as Jeremiah interrupted an almost-kiss between Belly and Conrad. This time, there was no Jeremiah in sight, but there were still fireworks as Belly almost kissed Conrad.
Days before the episode aired, The Summer I Turned Pretty creator Jenny Han acknowledged that there hadn’t been as much of Swift’s music in season 3 so far. (Fans heard “You’re Losing Me” in an earlier episode after Belly learned Jeremiah cheated on her.)
“I think I’ll say, I guess … keep watching,” Han, 44, told Variety earlier this month.
Season 1 previously used songs such as “Cruel Summer,” “Lover,” “The Way I Loved You (Taylor’s Version)” and “This Love (Taylor’s Version).” The second season, meanwhile, featured “August,” “Sweet Nothing,” “Delicate (Taylor’s Version),” “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” and “Exile.”
The season 3 trailer relied on “Daylight” and “Red (Taylor’s Version)” to set the scene. While it seemed as though Swift’s music was initially reserved for Belly and Conrad, Han noted that it was all about who the main character was interested in on screen.
“Many fans feel betrayed,” Han told The Los Angeles Times in 2023 after using “Delicate” for a scene between Belly and Jeremiah. “However, I never said that Taylor was only for Belly and Conrad. ‘Delicate’ is speaking to where Belly’s head and heart are at in that moment.”
The Summer I Turned Pretty airs on Prime Video Wednesdays.
