Stars of the iconic Father of the Bride franchise will forever remember their matriarch, Diane Keaton.
News broke on Saturday, October 11, that Keaton died at the age of 79. A cause of death was not immediately revealed.
The Oscar-winning actress, who is survived by her two children, starred as Nina Banks in 1991’s Father of the Bride opposite Steve Martin, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Martin Short and Kieran Culkin. The film, directed by Charles Shyer, followed parents Nina and George (Martin) as they help daughter Annie (Williams-Paisley) plan her whirlwind wedding to Bryan McKenzie (George Newbern).
Father of the Bride spurned a sequel, Father of the Bride Part II, in 1995 as both Annie and Nina discovered they were expecting babies at the same time. The entire cast, with the addition of newcomers Florence Pugh, Ben Platt and Alexandra Shipp, later reunited for a virtual sequel on YouTube amid the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
Two years later, Keaton exclusively told Us Weekly that she would “of course” be open to returning for another iteration of Father of the Bride.
“Steven, Marty, I mean, they’ve got their television show [Only Murders in the Building] now,” Keaton told Us in 2022. “I mean, they’re giants and they’re just incredibly great actors and funny and smart and all that. We all know that, and it works. How they’re doing it on TV is pretty remarkable.”

Steve Martin
Martin reposted Keaton’s throwback Interview magazine profile, where Short asked her which comedian was sexier.
“I mean, you’re both idiots,” Keaton said at the time.
In a Saturday Instagram note, Martin said that her remarks “sum up [their] delightful relationship.”
Williams-Paisley responded, writing in the comments section, “I can absolutely hear her saying that.”
Kimberly Williams-Paisley
“Diane, working with you will always be one of the highlights of my life. You are one of a kind, and it was thrilling to be in your orbit for a time,” she wrote in her own Instagram tribute, sharing throwback movie photos. “Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent, and above all, your laughter. 🙏🏻🕊️💔❤️❤️❤️.”
George Newbern
Newbern appeared in the films as Bryan McKenzie, Annie’s fiancé.
“Diane Keaton was a brilliant light in every project and in every way. She was elegant, charming, witty and searingly funny,” the Scandal alum wrote via Instagram. “I was so, so lucky to have spent time with her during the Father of the Bride films. She had a powerful ease about her, and had the ability to make a person feel like they were the only one in the room.”
Newbern continued, “She will be dearly missed. To my eye, she was an absolute artist. Unfailingly interesting and interested in all things Beautiful. Rest in peace, sweet Diane.”
Jazz Charton
While Charton did not appear in the films, her husband, Culkin, played Nina and George’s son, Matty. (Culkin does not have public social media profiles.) Charton reposted several tributes to Keaton via her Instagram Stories, including Martin’s.
