Popular chocolate maker recalls products over risk of ‘small stones’

Manhattan-based candy maker Tony’s Chocolonely issued a recall of its popular chocolate bars because some were found to contain “small stones,” the company said.

The affected products include the company’s Dark Almond Sea Salt and Everything Bar varieties.

“We wish this were an April Fools’ (joke), but we’d never kid about the quality of our products,” the company said in making the announcement on Tuesday.

Consumers who purchased the recalled chocolate bars have been instructed to return them to their original place of purchase for a full refund.

The recall targets bars with lot codes 162633, 162614, 163061, 4331, 4332, and 4333.

The Dark Almond Sea Salt bars affected have expiration dates of Feb. 28 and April 2, 2026 while the impacted Everything Bars display “best before” dates between Nov. 26 and Nov. 28 of this year.

Tony’s Chocolonely identified the source of the contamination as one of its almond suppliers, according to an announcement on its website.

An internal investigation revealed that almonds from a recent shipment had undergone insufficient processing at the supplier’s facility — leading to the inadvertent inclusion of small stones.

“We are extremely sorry to have to issue this recall, and for the inconvenience that this will cause people who purchased these products.” the company said.

Tony’s Chocolonely stressed that consumer safety and satisfaction remain their highest priorities, adding: “Whilst the probability of a product being affected is low, we always put the safety and satisfaction of our consumers first and that is why we have made the decision to recall these products.”

Tony’s Chocolonely is working closely with suppliers and distributors to resolve the issue swiftly and prevent future occurrences.

This recall follows closely on the heels of another food safety alert issued last week, where consumers were advised to avoid consuming a vegetable lasagna sold by Iceland supermarkets due to potential contamination with plastic fragments.

Customers are encouraged to check their products carefully and adhere to recall guidelines to ensure their safety.
