The 2026 Masters tournament will go on without two of the biggest names in golf.
Three-time Masters champ Phil Mickelson announced in a Thursday X post that he will miss this year’s festivities in Augusta due to a family health issue that will keep him “out for an extended period of time.”
“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter,” Mickelson’s post read. “I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year.
“I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching.”
Mickelson’s announcement comes just days after it was announced that Tiger Woods would not be at Augusta National following his DUI arrest in Jupiter Island, Fla., in which the 15-time major champion rolled his Land Rover over after clipping the back of a truck.
“We know how much Phil loves the Masters tournament and he will be missed by everyone in Augusta next week,” Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley said in a statement. “He has our complete supports as he takes time to be with his family.”
Mickelson, 55, missed four LIV Golf events earlier this year, saying he needed “to be present for a family health matter.”
He did not share any additional information about his absence.
The HyFlyers GC captain returned to the links for LIV in South Africa two weeks ago, finishing tied for 48th for that week.
Mickelson was set to make his 33rd start at the tournament after failing to make the cut last year and finishing 43rd in 2024.
Mickelson, who has won the green jacket on three different occasions, most recently won the Masters back in 2010.
The 2026 Masters begins on Thursday, Apr. 9.
