A 22-year-old man who was angry over a breakup allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend and her father, killing the 54-year-old man at a Texas home, according to authorities.
The woman, 19-year-old Enelsi Pavon, remains seriously injured following the shooting that left Leonel Pavon dead in Baytown on Monday, September 28, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in an update shared to Facebook on Tuesday, September 29.
Guillermo Mondragon Rosales is accused of fleeing the scene after shooting Enelsi and Leonel at their house, the sheriff said in a news release. Leonel was declared dead at the residence on North Redell Road, located about a 25-mile drive east from Houston.
Later that day, authorities found and apprehended Rosales near Waco.
Rosales was initially charged with aggravated assault in connection with the shooting of his ex-girlfriend, according to Gonzalez.
Rosales was subsequently charged with murder in relation to Leonel’s death.
The “motive appears to be Rosales’ anger over the ending of his dating relationship with Enelsi,” Gonzalez wrote on Facebook.
Following the shooting, Enelsi’s mother, Luz Marina Aviles, immediately suspected Enelsi’s former boyfriend was behind the attack, KHOU-TV reported. She described Rosales as having an alleged domestic violence history and obsession with her daughter.
“He was obsessed and thought he couldn’t get another girlfriend,” Aviles told the TV station.
The shooting unfolded after Leonel had taken Aviles to work, she said.
Aviles hopes Enelsi will survive as she mourns her husband.
“I know I can’t bring him back to life. But let the full weight of the law fall on him,” Aviles told the TV station.
After Rosales was arrested in the Waco area, he was detained in the McClennan County Jail, according to Gonzalez.
He’s expected to be transferred to Harris County to face charges.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Rosales had retained legal counsel.
“I’m grateful for the determined work of our teammates and our law enforcement partners who helped locate and apprehend the alleged suspect so quickly,” Gonzalez said in the news release.
“This is another painful reminder of the devastating impact intimate partner violence can have – not only on victims, but on entire families,” the sheriff added. “A father lost his life, and a young woman is fighting to recover. Please keep this family in your prayers as they face an unimaginable loss and a difficult road ahead.”
