New NYC Council caucus must crack down on animal sacrifices after number of ‘horrific cases’: Queens pol

News RoomBy News RoomMarch 7, 20260 ViewsNo Comments

A Queens pol wants to crack down on animal sacrifices in the Big Apple.

Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Queens) told The Post she joined the Council’s new animal welfare caucus in part to push for tougher laws prohibiting the ritualistic killing of animals, considering her district has long been plagued by the mutilation of chickens, pigs, rats and other critters.

“We’ve seen horrific cases of animal sacrifice along the shores of Jamaica Bay,” said Ariola, who represents much of The Rockways and Howard Beach.

“Through this caucus, I want to push for stronger laws, so the people committing these crimes are actually held accountable instead of getting the slap on the wrist that’s become far too common in animal-abuse cases. We need real consequences for those who harm innocent creatures.”

Councilman Harvey Epstein (D-Manhattan), who will chair the caucus, said he plans to listen to suggestions from all members – including Ariola.

He also said it is too premature to discuss whether the caucus will take a deep dive into animal sacrifices or an even bigger political hot potato: banning horse-drawn carriages, a topic previous Councils have considered but failed to approve.

Esptein and Council Speaker Julie Menin when announcing the new bipartisan caucus this week said it would be dedicated to advocating for the humane treatment of animals and advancing policies that make pet ownership more affordable in the Big Apple.

At least a dozen Council members have already agreed to join.
