San Francisco Giants pitcher Sean Hjelle has responded after his estranged wife, Caroline Hjelle, accused him of abuse and abandoning his family.
In a since-deleted video posted via TikTok on Friday, June 20, Caroline shared footage of the couple’s two sons, George, 5, and Emmett, 3, with a caption reading: “When my MLB husband abandons us on Mothers Day a week after (this video was taken) once I finally found out about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse, so I’ve been raising two boys alone.”
The video was accompanied with a series of hashtags, including #divorce, #cheating and #infidelity.
Caroline filed for divorce over a year ago, though the divorce is not yet finalized, according to The Athletic. The couple got married in March 2022.
Sean, 28, addressed the allegations made by Caroline after the Giants’ 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, June 21.
“I don’t have an official comment right now,” Sean told reporters. “I would like to actually talk with my agent, my lawyer. This has been something that’s been going on for over a year now in terms of our relationship and our divorce and our separation and everything.”
He added, “I just want to talk to the appropriate people and figure out what the steps are. Just kind of taking it in stride right now.”
While Sean neglected to give any official statement, he said he felt “confident” he would “have one eventually.”
“I don’t have an exact timeline on that, but I would like to actually get with the people that are handling the situation with me and for me before I actually make an official statement,” Sean said.
The matter was forwarded to MLB to be handled under the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy, according to The Athletic.
Giants manager Bob Melvin also addressed the allegations made against Sean on Saturday morning, saying he remains available to pitch.
“Obviously, we’re aware of it,” Melvin, 63, said. “He told me about it last night. We’ve talked to MLB, and at this point, it’s in their jurisdiction so we can’t comment on it any further.”
Us Weekly has reached out to Major League Baseball for comment.
Sean, a relief pitcher, has appeared in six games for the Giants this season, earning one save with a 4.66 ERA.
Prior to the since-deleted video, Caroline last posted via TikTok on June 10.
Calling herself a “solo mom,” Caroline shared her “last day of preschool routine” featuring clips of her two sons.
