Kirk Campbell is out as the offensive coordinator for the Michigan Wolverines.
Despite the Wolverines upsetting Ohio State over the weekend — in a game that was marred by a postgame brawl on the Ohio Stadium field — Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore relieved Campbell of his duties on Tuesday after the team went 7-5 (5-4 Big Ten) in the regular season.
Moore will conduct a national search to fill the role, while tight ends coach Steve Casula will be the Wolverines’ interim offensive coordinator, according to a news release from the university.
“After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction,” Moore said in a statement. “This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan Football and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors.”
The Michigan offense struggled in 2024 after winning a national championship last season.
The Wolverines were 128th among 134 FBS teams in yards per game, 122nd in yards per play, 125th in first downs per game and 111th in points per game.
Even in the win over the rival Buckeyes, Michigan scored just one touchdown.
The team also tallied over 30 points in a game just once this season and held below 20 points on six occasions.
Campbell joined the Wolverines’ coaching staff in 2022 as an analyst, working his way up to quarterbacks coach in 2023.
Campbell was promoted to offensive coordinator earlier this year after Moore took over as head coach following the departure of Jim Harbaugh.
