Miami of Ohio coach makes bold Speedo promise if team finishes regular season undefeated

News RoomBy News RoomFebruary 14, 20261 ViewsNo Comments

Miami of Ohio head coach Travis Steele has a big promise if his team goes undefeated this season.

Just nine wins away from accomplishing the feat, the Redhawks’ Steele is going to (nearly) show it all off on Selection Sunday.

Steele, during a Saturday appearance on “College GameDay,” vowed to wear a Speedo during the NCAA Tournament selection show if the Redhawks go 34-0 in a nod to his team’s biggest supporters.

“Done,” Steele told ESPN’s Rece Davis. “It’s done.”

Since late January, Miami’s men’s swimming and diving team has been showing up to Redhawks basketball games in nothing but Speedos, caps and goggles in one of the most unique home-court advantages imaginable.

With his team on the cusp of history, Steele gave his word to return the favor in front of America in mid-March.

The unofficial fan club started showing up to games on Jan. 27 during a close win over UMass.

Steele was surprised at the scene but was happy with the school spirit.

“I told them after the game, obviously, I really appreciated them doing what they were doing,” he said of the Miami athletes. “I told them we would return the favor and show up to one of their meets. We weren’t going to wear the Speedos, though.”

The Redhawks are the last undefeated team in men’s college basketball and have already set a MAC record for the best start to a season for a men’s basketball team.

Last month, Miami finally earned a spot in the AP top 25 and is now sitting at No. 23.

It’s the first time the program has been ranked since the 1998-99 season.

If they get there, the Redhawks will be making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007.
