The Mets officially activated J.D. Martinez, which meant they had to create roster space.
Zack Short became the odd man out, designated for assignment before the Mets began a series with the Cardinals at Citi Field on Friday.
Martinez, a late signing, missed 24 games (the Mets winning 13) as he received at-bats at the team’s spring training facility and in the minors.
The six-time All-Star is expected to slide behind Pete Alonso in the order in a Mets lineup that looks more formidable.
Short made the team out of camp as a flexible, defensively stout defender without much of a track record of hitting.
He went 1-for-9 in 10 games with the Mets, primarily coming off the bench and essentially serving as a second Joey Wendle.
Wendle remains on the team as a glove capable of moving around the infield.
Also spared was D.J. Stewart, who has come alive after a slow start and blasted three home runs to boost an .816 OPS.
Stewart figures to see some time at DH as Martinez builds himself up and could be a valuable, lefty bench bat.
