The financial repercussions for the Luka Doncic trade are expected to be quite dire for the Mavericks.
Dallas is projected to lose dozens of millions of dollars in revenue this season as a direct result of the shocking trade that took place earlier this year, sources told ESPN.
The revolt against the organization’s front office and ownership has been so strong since the decision to send Doncic to the Lakers that the Mavericks have seen dwindling attendance at American Airlines Arena, declining merchandise sales and sponsors have ended their relationships with the team due to the trade.
The team had attempted to save some face in the days after the trade by offering limited refunds to fans who wanted to cancel their season tickets in the wake of the trade.
The anger over the Doncic trade came back to the forefront this week as the beloved ex-Mavs star returned to Dallas for the first time since the trade.
He was given a hero’s welcome Wednesday with a tearjerking tribute video before the game, and fans cheered him every time he touched the ball in the 45-point effort against his former team.
Doncic received a standing ovation as he walked off the court after checking out of the 112-97 win for the final time, and fans chanted “Fire Nico” throughout the night, referring to Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison.
Prior to the game, Doncic blasted the “disrespectful” post-trade jabs that had come out following the trade.
And Mavericks coach Jason Kidd bizarrely called it “kinda cool” that someone compared the trade to Babe Ruth, presumably referencing the 1919 sale of the baseball legend by the Red Sox to the Yankees.
The sale turned into one of the biggest blunders in sports history for the Red Sox.
