As others prepare for the NCAA Tournament, Fordham will be looking for a new men’s basketball head coach.
The Rams fired Keith Urgo on Thursday, the university announced, and will commence a “national search” for his successor.
Urgo was 50-49 over three seasons at Fordham, none of which ended in the NCAA Tournament.
Elevated from associate head coach in April 2022, after Kyle Neptune left to replace Jay Wright at Villanova, Urgo breathed life into the program and led it one of its best seasons in decades in finishing 25-8. The Rams lost to Dayton in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament, though, and did not participate in a postseason tournament.
Neptune was also fired after this season by Villanova.
The past two seasons have been rough for the Rams, going a combined 25-41. This past season Fordham went 3-15 in conference, finishing last in the A-10.
Urgo, 44, was suspended four games this season for recruiting violations. The Rams went 2-2 under Urgo as part of its investigation with the NCAA. The Rams went 2-2 under associate head coach Tray Woodall.
Fordham’s season ended with an 88-81 loss to George Washington in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
