Bills quarterback Josh Allen was seen chewing on smelling salts while lighting up the Lions in a 41-31 win at Highmark Stadium on Thursday night.
The former NFL MVP was biting down on a packet of smelling salts while throwing on the sideline as the Bills were up 7-0 during the first quarter and Prime Video captured it before going to a commercial.
Allen accounted for five total touchdowns in Buffalo’s 41-31 win over Detroit in the grand opening of the $2.2 billion stadium, which has him in the early MVP conversation.
The internet had a field day over Allen chewing smelling salts, and many joked that it gave him a boost.
Smelling salts — capsules filled with amonia carbonate — are typically used by first responders to as stimulants to restore consciousness to persons who has fainted.
They’ve also been used by athletes for to provide sudden energy or alertness.
The NFLPA sent a memo to players last August clarifying that although the use of smelling salts and ammonia capsules is allowed, team employees are prohibited from distributing them and any other ammonia inhalant during pregame activities, games and halftime on the sideline or locker rooms.
Allen finished 20 of 31 for 248 yards and three touchdowns, and added 69 yards rushing plus two scores.
He scored the first touchdown at Highmark Stadium on a 1-yard plunge in the first quarter.
“I caught myself taking it all in, and understanding how cool what I get to do. My job is the coolest thing in the world,” Allen said. “It’s everything I ever wanted, to be the quarterback of an NFL franchise.
“I’m just very fortunate to have ended up in Buffalo and got to be the first quarterback to open this stadium, which is a special spot.”
Allen previously tallied a four-touchdown performance in Buffalo’s 36-31 season-opening win at Houston.
The Bills host the Chargers next Sunday.
