LOS ANGELES – In Part 5 and the finale of the series on the main New York free agents, we delve into the second- and third-layer free agents, notably those relievers who cost themselves a lot of money this year.
Part 1: Pete Alonso. Part 2: Cody Bellinger. Part 3: Edwin Diaz. Part 4: Trent Grisham.
The case for Ryan Helsley, Luke Weaver and Devin Williams
Can teams act like 2025 never happened? Going into the season, all three — Williams, in particular — were lined up for strong multi-year paydays.
Could interested teams see talented players who had hiccups, but are worth investing in? Williams, for example, still had underlying numbers you could believe in with elite swing-and-miss ability and strong hard-hit rates. Weaver had been the Yankees’ best reliever for most of the past two years and might have been tipping pitches in his worst stretches, which is generally correctable. Helsley was above average in St. Louis and it might be a good idea to keep him from enlisting in a big city.
