It appears the Jets will be without wide receiver Adonai Mitchell for another week.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed Wednesday that Mitchell had a “small procedure” on the injured finger on his right hand after previously saying that he had not had one.
Mitchell was listed as not practicing again on Wednesday and Glenn labeled him “week to week,” which usually translates into “he’s not playing” in Glenn-speak.
“The good thing is, man, he’s moving his fingers around really, really well, and I’m still going to put him on this week-to-week deal,” Glenn said.
Mitchell originally injured his finger in practice Sept. 24. Glenn said the next day that Mitchell had caught his finger in a teammate’s jersey and downplayed the injury, but Mitchell was spotted with a large cast/wrap on the hand the next day.
Glenn said Mitchell did not initially have the procedure done, waiting a bit.
That could explain why the Jets did not place Mitchell on injured reserve.
“Well, I think he waited like a week, week and a half before he had to see how he actually was going to progress and then we wanted to go ahead and get it knocked out,” Glenn said.
Sunday’s game with the Patriots would be the fourth game Mitchell has missed.
If the Jets knew it would be four weeks, they could have placed him on injured reserve and brought him back after that time to give themselves a roster spot.
RB Breece Hall (quad), edge Joseph Ossai (ankle) and OG Dylan Parham (knee) did not practice and probably will miss Sunday’s game.
TE Kenyon Sadiq (concussion) was limited, a good sign for his availability Sunday.
S Dane Belton (knee) was also limited.
LB Kiko Mauigoa (quad) was a full participant in practice.
The Jets opened the practice window on rookie WR Omar Cooper Jr. on Wednesday and now have 21 days to add him to the active roster.
He could be activated for Sunday’s game.
Cooper has been on IR since injuring his ankle in the Week 1 win over the Titans.
“More than anything, of a rookie getting the chance to come back and get these reps that he’s been missing, and I think that’s the number one thing,” Glenn said of getting Cooper back. “Obviously, he’s a really good player, but you never want any rookie to actually miss time because the reps are valuable for these guys.”
Glenn chose to have a walk-through Wednesday instead of practice for the second straight week.
Why?
“I just feel like it’s best for our team right now,” Glenn said.
The Patriots opened the practice window on WR A.J. Brown, who has been out with a high-ankle sprain. It is unclear if he will play Sunday. … Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez, who has missed the past two games with a shoulder injury, told reporters in New England that he is playing Sunday. … Rookie edge David Bailey was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his three-sack performance against the Browns. … The Jets signed LB Troy Reeder to the practice squad.
